Editorial

After a slip up against last year’s premiers, the Power boys hit back with a big win against Geelong.  The win puts us back in the top four, but it’s all so tight so we will have to keep winning.

Looking forward to the Supporter Club’s first official function for 2002, being the live telecast of our match in Tassie.  Hope to see everyone at the Port Club for this function.  Don’t forget to book.

Also late news, congratulations to John Cahill who was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame.

Thanks

The Supporter Club would like to thank Rob Snowdon, Russell Ebert and Andrew Russell from the Football Club for taking the time to write for us this year. Also, thanks to Stacey for organising these reports.

Milestones

Congratulations to Adam Kingsley for his 100th game, all with the Port Adelaide Football Club and Matthew Bishop for his 50th AFL game.  Unfortunately the boys didn’t get up against Brisbane.

Footballers & Fitness

[The following article by Head Fitness Coach Andrew Russell, was written prior to the game at the Gabba on 12th May 2002 and is published here as submitted. Ed]

After a great preparation during the pre-season where we had the majority of players missing very little training, the results are starting to show on the field. We currently have no soft tissue injuries keeping players off the field and our total injury list is manageable. The two major disappointments have been Michael Wilson's knee injury and Damon White's lower leg fracture and ankle injury, putting them both out for the season. Michael is back running and is building up his preparation as professionally as anyone could.  He does not leave any stoned unturned and will return in great shape next year as result.  Damon was starting to play great football and has shown everyone at Port that he will be an asset in the coming years. Damon will spend the year building his Upper Body strength to a level required to play senior and further improve his running capacity. Stephen Paxman has started running again after having a minor setback with his knee and is looking forward to playing in the near future.

The big challenge from a fitness perspective now that we are well into the season is to keep the players up for the rest of the year.  It is a fine balance between keeping them fresh enough to play good football every week but still put enough conditioning into their legs so that they are still running hard late in the year when it all counts. Many players carry little niggles every week and it is our job to give them enough work to maintain fitness without further irritating the sore areas so that they can play at an optimum level every week. Much work is done in the gym and the rehab room out of the public eye to get the players to this required level. The team approach is vital in this process and communication between the Physio, Doctor, Conditioning Coach, Head Coach and Player is vital. The overall Goal is simple, to win Football Games. If you have more players available then the coaches have a greater pool in which to choose the best team possible to achieve this goal.

Head Fitness Coach

Power v St Kilda Trip Report

Again we hit the road for the second Sunday Melbourne game in a row. Having already done the trip the week before to watch the game against Melbourne, it was a tad hard hitting the road again. Fortunately, we had a pretty good idea that the boys would have a better result than the previous two weeks.

It was a fairly small crowd at Colonial and a quiet one once they realised that again they were going to sit through a loss. Our boys played extremely well, in particular Josh Carr and Jarrad Schofield who both had 26 possessions. Brendon Lade kicked 4 goals and Peter Burgoyne 3. A great win, which made the trip straight, back to Adelaide a little easier. Fingers crossed we never again have two Sunday games in Melbourne in a row!
